Went back up in the attic before it gets too hot. Made note of what cable goes where and replaced one of the splitters with one made for digital cable. I plan on getting a larger splitter and use the small one here for the cable internet.

Kinja'd!!!

When I found out which one is the main line I cringed a bit. This thing is about to go! I was going to undo it and put it on the Extreme splitter, but I don’t want to risk breaking it right now.

Just need to figure out how long of a RG6 cable I need. Found the splice outside the house where the cable from the pedestal to the house connects. Will be easy to replace.

Kinja'd!!!

I plan on getting this splitter for now and see how it goes when I put new cables.

less cable, less connections, and more solid connections are a good idea.

my DSL was BS speed. went to my basement and found a tangled mess. 100s of feet of spooled cable going nowhere, and random connections. removing all the garbage made a HUGE difference.

lets also take a minute to note the lack of grounding on any of the spliters. Also, I found that spliters make a big difference in dB loss, a quality spliter matters

That’s what drives me crazy about living in condo buildings. I know that over the years, as management has changed providers, each one comes in and makes it more of a clusterfuck than the last. I just know it. We are buying a place this summer and I cannot wait to get in and get everything wired the way I want it/need it to be.

grounding you say... that’s not a thing I see on any in my basement. Hmm...

its not even differing management. mine is a brand new house and I’m it’s first occupant. just lazy.

and my tv cables get chopped and changed every few years as I switch providers and their installers all have their own little way of doing things.

i think you could just trim the damaged line back and add a new end

I could, but all new will be better.

There are 2 mounting screws and 1 grounding screw on those spliters on the picture, grounding helps clean up the noise in the line a little. Its not necessary but it can help.

The nice thing about a house though, is that you have access to everything. Not necessarily easy access, but access nontheless. Sure there are some limitations on what you can/cannot change or modify because of each provider but such is life. It’s like you said, the actual installs and each having their own way of doing things just makes it such a mess each time (usually).

Once we buy the place I plan on doing a full lookover with my business partner and our wiring guy, then having whoever our provider is come out for the set up and only letting them do the absolute basics. Then we are going to make sure we have it set up as efficiently as possible.

and my basement is currently unfinished. which (to keep the oppo relevance) has allowed me to store complete parts for about 3 cars (dont tell the wife how many cars are down there!), but also allows me to see the mess they made of the wiring’s entry to my house. From doing a few renovations to the kids’ rooms, it SEEMS like behind the walls is not a mess, just the garbage where it was dropped intot eh house temporarily and later connected.

I plan on doing it right. Should I ground it to a plumbing pipe? Not much metal in the attic.

I won’t tell her! I’d hope that behind the walls is fine. It’s usually the entry and the splitting where it gets messy, from what I’ve seen.

Our current building was built pre 1910, converted to loft/condo in the late 90's, and I am fairly certain, from what I can and have been able to see, that over the years, even the wiring within the walls has become a major mess.

You can ground it to a pipe if necessary. Also, don’t run the lines parallel to electrical, cross it perpendicular. The cable is shielded but there is still enough field generated by the voltage to cause interference if you run them alone side one another.

Why not cut the main line and put a new tip on it?

For the number of sources you are providing signal to you perhaps should consider a distribution amplifier. This will prevent signal degradation and give you the opportunity to add additional sources at a later date if necessary. If you are going to do it once make the most improvements you can.
